Dr. Allan Charles and His Flying Cape

By Dr. Sarah Carter

Many people who live in Union, and students who have attended USCU know Dr. Allan Charles, a history professor who grew up in Union and has been teaching at the university since 1968. What everyone doesn’t know is the story of his flying cape.

Many years ago, on a bright and sunny afternoon, Dr. Allan Charles was sitting in a barbershop on Main Street in Union, about to get his hair trimmed by a young beautiful woman named Hassie May. Hassie May was a very diligent hair stylist, and detailed in her work, and that is why Dr. Charles always chose to see her when he wanted his hair cut.

Well, Hassie May had just tied the hair cape around Dr. Charle’s neck when suddenly, there was a loud crash outside, and everything was instantly quiet.

No one knew what had happened, but Dr. Allan Charles was swift to find out and he immediately jumped up from his chair and rushed out the shop’s front door. As he ran, the cape Hassie May had placed around his neck and shoulders flew behind him and he instantly embodied a superhero flying into action.

The wind must have picked him up and helped him fly back to campus because no-one remembers what happened after the moment he flew out of the barbershop.

Anyone that wants to ask him more about this story can find him on campus most days of the week.
